Welcome to the Academic Freedom Committee!

There have been grave violations of academic freedom at DePaul University. In June 2007, a large group of students converged upon DePaul President Fr. Dennis Holtschneider's office to protest the tenure denials of Dr. Norman Finkelstein of the Dept. of Political Science, and Dr. Mehrene Larudee of the International Studies Program. These tenure denials were politically motivated events and have degraded academic freedom at DePaul University.

After a meeting between 40 students and Fr. Holtschneider, we refused to leave the office and only under the threat of expulsion did we vacate a few days later. We organized a fast and a visible protest at graduation, and have managed to generate much press.

Over the summer, we have organized ourselves as a student organization and have begun preparations for a number of programs. From day one, we represented the leadership of a variety of student organizations, and we have prepared ourselves to be agile and forward moving as the Fall quarter begins.

Please keep your eyes open for this website, as we finalize preparations for our fall programming. If you are interested in contacting us or attending our University without Walls program which meets every Wednesday, please feel free to email us at info@academicfreedomchicago.org, or click "contact us" in the menu.

Thank you all very much for your support!
